Hi guys (I am sorry to post in English, I speak quite well Finnish, but have problem with writing in it...)

I was thinking about buying Kawasaki ER-5 as my first ''big bike'' and I would like to ask You for help.

I read that this bike is quite good for beginners, I like how it looks (2004 I like a lot), insurance isn't bad- just randomly check one company, and they offer full insurance for 533e (that is a good price for me but I believe if I search a bit can get even better).

BUT I really don't know much what I should check when I buy used bike, what ridden KM is still fine, when have to be madesome service, etc.

So could someone please tell me some buying tips, recommendations, what not to buy? I would like to get a bike for like 1500e, can be 2000 if its in good shape, so could somebody please tell me how goes: year of bike/ price / ridden KM? that I wouldn't buy something terribly overpriced or miss some good opportunity.

Sadly, I know only one person who is riding on a bike, but he doesn't know much about them so he wasn't really helpful.

Thank You much for help - replies can be in Finnish

    Cheers Pavel

I know one guy from this forum who has this bike in his garage. He could maybe sell this to you with "cheap price"? I think this bike is red(?). This guy also does all the services himself... But lets wait if he'll answer.

    Hi,
there are basically no big issues in these bikes. Solid well made, if somewhat boring technology. Mine was ridden well over 60000km when I sold it. No issues except sometimes temperamental ignition switch (key had to be at excatly right position, otherwise starter would not rotate).

So, things to check are the same as always, consumables. The following applies more or less to any make:

Tires (new ones cost around 100€ or more per end and labour)
Chains (new set is around 150 + labour)
    Brake pads (cheap)
Service. Basically it means oil and filter change every 6000km, valve clearance check (screw adjustable) and air filter change and spark plugs every 12000km.
Check that front forks do not leak. New seals are not expensive but fitting is a bit laborious.
General feel - has the bike been well maintained ?

Also consider Honda CB 500, Suzuki GS 500, Suzuki Bandit 600 and even 1200, Kawasaki ZR7, Honda CB750. Try to find a nice well maintained one. Insurance and maintenance cost will be more or less identical.

    Thanks for replies.

I have to admit, i really like looks of Suzuki GS 500, Suzuki Bandit 600/1200, Kawasaki ZR7 =D
How often chains need to be change (just around)? And what TKM can be consider as 'end of life' that i should not buy anymore?

    Cheers.

    Hi,

I had Suzuki GSX1250 for couple of years and the chains and sprockets were changed at ~45000km. Cleaning and lubrication is really essential. I did lubrication at every ~1000km and if I was riding when it was raining then lubrication after each day.

One can very safely say that with these low tune machines anything under 100 tkm is up to general maintenance:

    Chassis bearings
    Wheel bearings
    Fluids
    Valve checks
    Chain & sprockets
    Tyres
Suspension on these is shite anyway so if the seals actually seal and the damper sits in its place it is enough
General looks of the bike. Corrosion marks, any rounded fasteners, leaks etc.

In a nutshell a bike with well documented service history (be it dealer or DIY) is always worth a look despite the mileage vs. a bike with a lot of unknowns. After all, these are close to 15 years old now.
